Essay: Is Social Media Democratic?

             Democracy, in one definition, reads: “The principle of equality of rights, opportunity, and treatment…” and in theory, social media and the internet in general are excellent examples of this, simply because we live in a digital age where everyone is included and treated equally. Although this tends to be the understanding for most, it is definitely not the case for people with disabilities. Yes, technology has come a long way, and it has brought many advances in a wide array of industries, including accessible technologies. However, now that we are in the time of the internet and social media, there are websites being created in the blink of an eye, constant changes being made, and an increasing need to be connected (literally and figuratively) online, those with disabilities are falling through the cracks. As unfortunate as this is, we must first review the specific rights of those with disabilities, since rights and online accessibility form a continuous loop.
