Blog Post 13: Scar Tissue

This Book Nerds review focuses on a truly riveting novel, Scar Tissue by Anthony Kiedis and collaborator Larry Sloman. Perhaps you recognize the name Anthony Kiedis? I hope you do, he is the lead singer and song writer for the band The Red Hot Chilli Peppers! A band formed in 1983 by four crazy funk rockers from LA. The Chilli Peppers are still going strong to this day with their last album released in 2016. I was first introduced to this band by my older brother and quickly saw the appeal of their music, and I even got the chance to see them in concert! So when I found out Anthony Kiedis had a book, I had to read it, thank you Black Friday Kindle sales!

Scar Tissue is a heartbreaking, captivating, and very exciting book to read. It is from Anthony Kiedis’s perspective, and brings us into the very hectic life of a rock musician. He shares his entire life story from his unorthodox childhood, to his wild teen years, through his early twenties struggling musician stage, finally making it big as a band, his various relationships friends family and girlfriends alike, his heartbreaking drug addiction and finally his sobriety and recovery. We learn how the band was formed with the many different band members over the years, how the band name came to be, how a band goes about getting a producer, label, and studio and recording time, as well as all their crazy and hilarious stage costumes and stunts. Overall it gives us a glimpse into the side of a rock band that fans rarely get to see.

I honestly COULD NOT PUT THIS BOOK DOWN! I don’t usually read non-fiction novels, just not really my thing, but from the very first page of Scar Tissue I was hooked. I think originally because I knew of the band and really enjoyed their music, and was all like, “Hey, I saw their concert, it’s pretty cool there is a book about them, lets buy it and check it out,” and I am so glad I did. I highly recommend reading this book, if you are at all interested in rock music, or even the side of bands and music that we hardly ever get to see then this book is for you.
